The framework for the comprehensive protection for children’s rights is based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC)1 and other complementary international human rights treaties. Since the adoption of the CRC to date, 196 Member States have acceded to and ratified this international instrument.
The latest global Study on Child labour 1 indicates that 160 million children are still engaged in child labour. That is almost one in ten children worldwide. Among the children 63 million were girls and 97 million were boys. Nearly the half of working children 79 million were involved in hazardous work that directly endangers their safety, development and health and access and enjoyment of rights.

It provides an insight into the multifaceted role of a fisheries observer, their safety, welfare, and the challenges inherent in this profession. It further explores generic examples of the kinds of work an observer could undertake in terms of scope and presence in maritime regions around the globe.
