The latest global Study on Child labour indicates that 160 million children are still engaged in child labour. That is almost one in ten children worldwide.

In the second of our child rights Knowledge and Insights Briefing Notes, we explore the detail of applicable legislation to protect the rights of the child in maritime communities. This includes children living in coastal communties working in fisheries and aquacutlure.

The framework for the comprehensive protection for children’s rights is based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and other complementary international human rights treaties. Since the adoption of the CRC to date, 196 Member States have acceded to and ratified this international instrument.

Written by Virginia Murillo Herrera, we delve into the facts and detail around child labour legislation in protecting the rights of the child in the maritime environment.
