The powerful documentary ‘Death at Sea’ has been nominated for a coveted Jackson Wild Media Award, widely considered to be the most prestigious recognition in the world of natural history and environmental filmmaking. This nomination underscores the film’s impact in raising awareness about the risks fisheries observers face on the high seas.
‘Death at Sea,’ directed by Sara Pipernos, dives into the story of Eritara Aati Kaierua, a fisheries observer who died onboard the Taiwanese-flagged Fishing Vessel (FV) Win Far 636, and whose case remains unsolved to this day.
The director, in partnership with Human Rights at Sea International, have since launched a justice campaign, hosted at deathatseafilm.com, that seeks worker’s compensation for Eritara’s wife and the ratification of international policies that serve to protect observers worldwide.
“We are incredibly honoured to be nominated for a Jackson Wild Media Award,” said Sara Pipernos. “With the film gaining traction on the festival circuit, the issues facing observers can now reach a global audience, helping raise awareness about Eritara’s story and the need to protect human rights at sea.”
The Jackson Wild Media Awards Gala will take place on September 5, 2024 in Silver Spring, Maryland. The event gathers filmmakers from around the world, including nominees from A24, Netflix, Apple TV+, National Geographic, and the BBC.
Over 500 films entered the competition in 2024, with over 1,100 category entries from 74 different countries around the world. Finalists were selected by more than 200 international judges who together screened over 1,000 hours of media.
