Death at Sea has been selected for the prestigious 17th Festival de Films Pêcheurs du monde (Fishermen of the World Film Festival), set to take place in Lorient, France, from 20-30 March 2025.
The renowned festival celebrates films from across the globe that dive into fishers’ daily lives, exploring their cultures, stories, and the unique challenges they face. This year’s theme centres on fishers' adaptability and resilience in the face of environmental change—a topic deeply aligned with the themes explored in Death at Sea. Like many fisheries observers – Eritara had to choose between his safety and his dedication to his work protecting the sea’s resources from exploitation.
With over 40 films showcased across 10 days of screenings, panels, and discussions, the festival is expected to attract more than 3,000 spectators. Participants will include fishers, scientists, filmmakers, and community members alike, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and research.
Last year's winners of the festival (see poster for 16th edition to the right) include Ian Urbina’s Squid Fleet (Outlaw Ocean Project), and A Letter from Yene, directed by New York University distinguished professor Diawara Manthia.
The Death at Sea Justice Campaign extend our deepest gratitude to the festival jury for recognizing Death at Sea and to the organizers for translating the film into French, ensuring its accessibility to local audiences.
