Come join us at a screening of the award-winning documentary, Death at Sea, hosted by Dr. Andrea Longo from SOAS University of London in partnership with Human Rights at Sea International.

Date: Monday, 14 October 2024

Time: 18:15 - 20:30

Location: Everyman Cinema Borough Yards, London, SE1 9P

The event will be followed by an expert roundtable discussing policies geared at ending abuse against fisheries observers and migrant fishers at sea.

Death at Sea follows the life and untimely death of Kiribati fisheries observer, Eritara Aati Kaierua, through the eyes of the family he left behind. Eritara, who was working on the Taiwanese flagged fishing vessel Win Far 636, is not the first observer to die in unexplained circumstances at sea. The nature of an observer’s work, which can include monitoring for, and reporting on, illegal fishing, can invite direct personal conflict with crew. The film also highlights the abuses faced by migrant fishers, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced protections and reforms for fishers and observers alike.

Following the screening, join us for a roundtable discussion moderated by Dr. Andrea Longo, featuring leading experts:

  • George Duncan-Jones (Researcher, Blue Marine Foundation)
  • David Hammond (Executive Director, HRAS International, Founder Human Rights at Sea)
  • John Burton (Founder & Chairman, Sustainable Fisheries & Communities Trust)
  • Sara Pipernos (Director, Death at Sea)
  • Pedro Sousa de Jesus (Fisheries observer)

Space is limited, so please register for a ticket via Eventbrite [insert link] to ensure your place. Light refreshments will also be provided.
